Russia does not celebrate Father's Day as it is celebrated in the West. They celebrate Defender of the Fatherland Day,yearly on February 23. It marks the date in 1918 when the first mass draft into the Red Army occurred in Petrograd and Moscow during the Russian Civil War.

Military service is compulsory for all males, hence it's defacto status as father's day, but females who have served in the military are also celebrated on this day.

This leads to the interesting situation that I celebrate my wife (Naval Officer) on "Fathers Day" but, since I have never done Russian military service, she and our daughter do not recognize any significance of the day for me.
