He did ascend into heaven after he raised himself from the dead and visited his followers for a while. No one knows the exact date except God though he did mention signs to look for. He will return at the rapture to collect the dead and the living church which will meet him in the air to go live out the tribulation in celebration. He will return after 7 years setting down on the Mount of Olives and defeating his enemies in Armageddon and establishing his earthly kingdom for a thousand years before he then sits with God at the Great Judgement of everyone. Then eternity starts.
According to Jesus... He doesn't return to gather His elect until after the Great Tribulation:
"...Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light... And THEN shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven... and He shall send His angels... and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." (Matt.24:29-31)
That's "when" to look for His return. Not until "then."
Except by this point his elect are already in Heaven having been partying they are spread now out so he sends his angels to collect them into one place. If you wait till then you will not be part of the group.

Returning to Jerusalem they found Jesus in the Temple, listening to and asking questions of the teachers there. Jesus even at age 12 would not gamble and there was no gambling in the temple.
