Memorial Day Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May (most recently observed May 26, 2014).

It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday began in 1868 and commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It first began to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. They requested permission of their general, John A Logan, to decorate the gravesites of their fallen comrades (Hence the Decoration Day).

After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action.

Memorial Day is a US holiday to honor all military personnel who died during a war or military action in which the United States was involved. It started being observed in 1868, three years after the US Civil War ended when it was called Decoration Day. It will continue to be observed to honor those who died and will include any future conflict that involves the United States.
