Rory Cochrane's character was killed off CSI: Miami as he wanted to get back to making movies and was sick of being tied down to a tv show schedule for most of the year and wanted to be able to go back to NY to see his family. My guess is that killing off his character was used to add to the drama of the series as opposed to simply writing his character off in a non-lethal way and, maybe the producer was a little pissed at him for getting out of his contract 4 years early.
