J.B Priestly uses dramatic devices in several ways throughout act 1 of an inspector calls. most of these points i have found in act 1, are of the obvious, however they require depths of analysis, to reach the full potential whilst answering this question. we are doing this as an essay question at the moment in english.
"Dramatic irony" is used in "An Inspector Calls" when the audience knows something that the characters do not. This creates tension and suspense as the audience waits for the characters to discover the truth. For example, the audience knows that the characters' actions will have consequences, but the characters are unaware of this fact.
The play "An Inspector Calls" by J.B. Priestly is full of dramatic irony. When Sheila and Gerald celebrate are getting engaged they are very optimistic for their relationship and then the Inspector comes and changes that completely. That is within the play. An example of dramatic irony stretching to beyond the play is when Mr. Birling is merrily proclaiming the perfect time in which Sheila and Gerald are getting married in. He uses the famous Titanic as an example of development calling it "unsinkable." This is very ironic because despite everyone believing it impossible the Titanic (as I am sure you know) did sink killing many passengers. He also claims that there is no chance of Germany starting a war which ironic in the same way because the play is set in 1912 (or 1911) just a few years before the initiation of the first world war. There are more examples near the end of the play but I don't want to write too much.
The play is set just before WW1 and the Titanic sinking etc. but Mr Birling keeps saying none of these things events will happen. and when we know Eric got Eva pregnant and Mrs. Birling doesn't.
"Dramatic irony" is used in "An Inspector Calls" when the audience knows more about the characters and situation than the characters themselves. For example, the audience knows that Eva Smith's death is connected to each character before they do. This creates tension and suspense as the audience waits for the characters to discover the truth.

One example of irony in "An Inspector Calls" is when Mr. Birling confidently dismisses the possibility of a scandal, only for the arrival of the Inspector to reveal the family's involvement in Eva Smith's death. This highlights the hypocrisy and self-righteousness of the upper class characters.
