I think people tend to delay the inevitable while their pet is still suffering. There is such an enormous feeling of guilt because no loving pet owner wants to put their cat down. It feels like losing a family member.
Here's what to do: See your favorite Vet and ask their opinion as they can evaluate your cat's condition. Is the condition really terminal or can something be done for your pet? Your Vet can tell you. If you have doubts, get a second opinion. I know that I did, just to be sure. You want to be sure that your cat's condition is beyond any help.
It was such a terrible decision to make the appointment to have this done, but I knew that my cat was suffering terribly. And I wanted her to be relieved of this suffering.
Be with your cat while it is being put down. It is such a loving tribute you can give your cat if you are with them in the room holding them while they are put down. After it is done, you can stay with your cat a few minutes longer and reflect. It has been two years since my cat was put down, and I still grieve. But I am glad I was with her in her last moments.
