Brake pads have a wear indicator device built-in - causes a light weight piece of metal to hit the rotor when the pads are worn to a certain point, which makes a high pitched screechy type sound.
Most people don't notice it, and end up going until the pad is completely gone and the brakes then are metal-on-metal grinding - now that they notice.
