The International Space Station is visible over most parts of Earth about every 6 weeks, and it can then be seen regularly for about 10 days to two weeks. There are various sites that will tell you when it can be seen from your location. You need to check on them regularly as they only give predictions for about 10 days in advance. Are you sure it was a satellite ? The International Space Station is also visible from earth. Most satellites are in a geo-stationary orbit - in that they orbit the earth at the same speed the earth spins on its axis.
