Weekends, of course, are always much more crowded, and on rainy days the museum is overrun by screaming, hyperactive pre-school children and the babysitters who don't know where else to take them.

The middle of the week is the least crowded days. I would suggest going either Tuesday or Wednesday for the shortest lines.

It's a two mile walk to Cromwell Road where the Museum is situated if you choose to walk, so about 40 minutes. By Underground the ride takes thirteen minutes, get off at South Kensington station; then it's 5 to 10 minutes to walk. A taxi will take at least as long at that hour of the day and will be much more expensive.
