You can see the chromosphere during a total eclipse.
The part of the sun that lies directly above the visible surface is called the chromosphere. It literally means "sphere of color".

The six reigons of the sun are, The Core, The Radiative Zone, The Convective Zone, the visible surface (The Photosphere), The Chromosphere, and the outermost region, The Corona.
The Sun's atmosphere is called the chromosphere and the corona. The photosphere which is below the chromosphere and is the visible surface of the Sun is usually considered to be part of the atmosphere also.

# photosphere: the innermost layer of the sun's atmosphere that gives off visible light. # chromosphere: the middle layer of the sun's atmosphere. # corona: The outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere that extends into space.
the chromosphere glows because of the release of hot, low density gases that are emitted from the sun. Normally, it can't be seen by the naked eye due to light from the photosphere blocking it. During a solar eclipse, the chromosphere is visible, appearing as a red ring around the Sun.
Chromosphere and coronaThe three layers of the suns atmosphere are the photosphere, chromosphere, and the corona.

The layers of the sun's atmosphere are the photosphere, (Greek for Light) the chromosphere, (Greek for color), and the Corona (Greek for Crown). The photosphere is the inner layer of the sun's atmosphere. It creates light. The chromosphere is the middle layer. It has a reddish glow. The corona is the outer layer. It is only visible during an eclipse. The bright red halo around the visible surface of the sun is the corona, the sun's upper atmosphere. by Ashley age 9 IT CAN ALSO BE CALLED THE CHROMOSPHERE:) SABRINA AGE 14

These parts of the Sun are so dim - compared to the brilliance of the Sun itself - that you can't see them when the Sun is visible. Block the Sun with the mass of the Moon, and THEN you'd be able to see the corona. But when the Sun is visible, nothing else around it is.
