The next total eclipse of the Sun on Long island, New York will be on May 1, 2079.
For few seconds
May 1, 2079. Better set your alarm now. Yes, I'm being completely serious. Well, except for the "alarm" part. It's very rare for any given location to experience a total solar eclipse. The next one on Long Island after that won't occur until 2144.

A solar eclipse lasts about 15 minutes
No, your eyes can be permanently damaged if you look at the solar eclipse for too long.
It all depends

Solar eclipses happen twice a year or so. The problem is that the geometry is a little touchy; if it isn't just so, you won't get a total eclipse, but only a partial eclipse. And the area of the Earth affected by the solar eclipse is very small; a path about 100 miles wide and a few thousand miles long. Since 75% of the Earth's surface is water, a lot of eclipses aren't visible on land at all. NASA's Eclipse web page will let you see when each eclipse will occur, and where.
There were no total solar eclipses during 2007. There was one total lunar eclipse, one partial lunar eclipse, and two partial solar eclipses.
