Just before a storm, the air becomes very humid. Leaves with soft stems, such a maple and oak, react to the sudden change in humidity. The stem become limp, and allow any breeze to turn them.
I asked the same question a long time ago to an old timer friend of mine and he told me that it meant a sudden change in weather , generally meaning that it was going to rain. Hope that answers your question!!!
When humidity is going up and storms are coming, trees turn their leaves over to help absorb moisture. Seeing the leaves curl in this way is a good predictor of rain.
Leaves of most trees do not actually close, but some turn "sideways" when it is about to rain.

Yes
The weight of the rain falling on a branch will add to the strain on the branch. The leaves do not absorb the water.
Acid rain can damage the leaves on trees and can kill them.
