For thousands of years man has tried to solve medical problems with various substances. Some have been herbal while others have been mineral substances like Mercury. It wasna't until the late 1700's that the idea of germs existed. Often it was thought that things like the night air caused disease and there was little knowledge about how the body worked. Laws were passed preventing doctors from viewing the human body or to have a patient take off clothing to treat them.
