Was it possible to live near Auschwitz and not know what was happening their?

Not really- the residents of nearby villages and settlements would have seen the huge numbers of people being herded in there in daily trainloads, they would have heard the screams and the gunshots, and they would have smelt burning flesh from the crematoria. But they were either frightened to act in case they were sent there themselves, went into self-denial, or actively supported what was happening there.

How is this Auschwitz imprortant in the novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas?

Auschwitz, the setting of the majority of the story, is important because it's the one of the harshest concentration camp created by the Germans. Shmuel, a Jewish boy, is forced to live in Auschwitz and Bruno, a German boy, is also forced to live there as well (this is because his father, the commandant got transferred to Auschwitz and the whole family had to follow him).
