If your question is about harm to the engine, and it is a gasoline (Petrol) engine, the answer is "none". If it is a diesel engine, and you put gasoline/petrol in it (like my wife did once) it will soon come to a stop. You will need to get a tow to a dealership and have the fuel tank emptied. It should not have any problems thereafter.
If your question deals with harm to the environment, that is a completely different issue and beyond the scope of this forum.
Who told you it is harmful? It is only harmful if it is a Diesel engine. If it is a petrol (gasoline) engine then Petrol is what it takes to run.
Petrol is British name for Gasoline
Short answer Yes. Petrol is useful for running a engine, and extremely dangerous if misused.
The engine will not run without a supply of petrol so you would think it is useful.

the carbon dioxide which comes from the burned petrol of cars is definitely harmful if you directly breathe it in, but not really harmful otherwise
Harmful, because petrol fumes are produced by various engines that are considered to be harmful. Also, they pollute the environment.
It is useful!
Used properly where it was intended to be used for gasoline powered engines is useful. Breathing gasoline vapors to get high is harmful not mention stupid.
Well petrol is short for petroleum which is Gasoline! so unless your car runs on anything thing else i'd say its usefuL!
Petrol is known also as gasoline. It is useful because it makes the car run. But it is harmful to the environment due to the byproducts of the combustion required to make it run the car. The exhaust of a car that uses gasoline has many poisonous gasses and compounds. Carbon monoxide is one. This gas can kill you easily, even in your own car while you are driving it down the road.
It burns up and goes to the engine to power it so your car can move
