oil is lighter than water so the oil floats on the water. you can prove it by shaking a bottle with water and oil and shake it then leave it overnight then check it and you'll see why oil and water don't mix .

∙ 10y agoThere is a chemical reason that oil and water cannot mix. Water is what is known as a polar molecule, meaning that one end of the molecule is positively charged, and the other is negatively charged. Oil, however, is made up of non-polar molecules and therefore does not attract the surround water molecules. Since the oil is separated from the water, eventually the oil will gather together.
