We try not to delete discussions; it is okay for them to get a bit more off topic than the answer.
However, from time to time we do delete a discussion. When a discussion is deleted, it is usually due to it being argumentative or inflammatory.
There are terms of use and etiquette expectations on the site, and they must be adhered to - even in the discussions.

Comments can disappear. Discussion comments have the same content policies as the answers have. If a comment contains material contrary to the TOU, it can be deleted.

No it cannot get deleted automatically. The history should be cleaned explicitly by the user.
Both "discussion of" and "discussion on" are grammatically correct phrases, but they have slightly different meanings. If they have only been deleted from your inbox, they should be accessable in your Trash. If they have been deleted from your trash, they are irretreiveable.
