If you hear a grinding noise when stopping, replace them NOW.
Once brakes start wearing thin, they usually start giving "warning screeches" (something in the brakes squeals each time you're using them). Listen for that while you're driving and see if you hear anything. (That applies for front & rear.)
If you don't hear anything, look at your rotors and brakes. You probably won't even have to take the tire off. See any grooves in the rotor? You need new brakes. Can you see how much padding is left on the brake pad? If it's getting down to around 1/4" or so, you need new brakes.
