Horses are generally clipped when they are in hard work during the winter and really sweating, though it's not necessary. Clipping is rarely NECESSARY, though many owners of horses with cushings disease will clip their horses for their comfort in the summer months.

Why should you clip a horse?

You should clip any horse in the winter that is doing enough work to sweat a lot, because with their winter coats they take longer to cool out and get colder with their heavy coats preventing the sweat from evaporating. Clipped horses should always be blanketed at least at night and it is an act of kindness to leave the legs and long whiskers on the chin unclipped.

its not actually on the horse, its kind of like a way of cutting a horses fur, you "clip" their hair, like shaving some-one's head, there are lots of different types of clips which just include clipping the fur off in different places basically, the hunter clip is just one of these.
