The recommended actions to take in the case of an attempted abduction, in order, are to:

  1. Loudly yell out "Call 911" even if you do not see any other people nearby. Continue screaming "Call 911" over and over and over, as loud as you can. The reason for yelling "Call 911" is experts and law enforcement find that most people will pick up the phone to notify police of a crime, more than they would intervene.
  2. At the same time, DROP. An abductor cannot carry "dead weight". If a potential victim goes limp and drops to the ground, the only way an abductor could take the person is to carry or drag the person.
  3. If the abductor tries to force you into your car, drop your keys on the ground and as you pretend to reach for the keys, DROP, go limp. See reason #2.
  4. If an abductor enters your car while you are already inside, refuse to drive ANY where. Reason: A victim is more likely to be seriously hurt or killed at a "second location", versus at the initial location. Instead of driving, fumble, drop the keys to the floor (or out the window) and EXIT the car as quick as you can.

Call 911 (in USA) is the shortest, quickest verbal message to yell. It tells outsiders exactly what you need them to do. It removes outsiders from feeling you want them to get involved directly; most outsiders are afraid they would also become a victim by trying to help a victim.

The following are NOT recommended to do:

  • If you scream FIRE, most people will run AWAY from your voice, NOT toward you to help. They may not even call 911.
  • If you only scream HELP, people are wary and stay away. They don't know what "help" you need. If you ever yell help for a non-emergency, yell the reason too -- "I fell and broke my ankle--help--Call an ambulance".
