Let's look first at the compound HCl. Based on what you learned in the Compounds and Bonds Section, recall that this is an ionic compound. Since hydrogen (H) has one valence electron and chlorine (Cl) has seven, both readily ionize and form an ionic compound. In this process, hydrogen forms the cation H+, which is just a proton. Chlorine becomes the anion Cl-. Look at what happens when HCl is dissolved in water:

HCl + H2O → Cl- + H3O+

This shows us that HCl reacts in water to form Cl- and H3O+. HCl is a type of acid called hydrochloric acid. When it dissolves in water, it breaks down into its constituent ions, H+ and Cl-. While the Cl- ion remains by itself in solution, the newly released H+ ion attaches itself to a water molecule and forms H3O+. Since a water molecule is made of 2 hydrogen atoms combined with one oxygen atom, when we add a hydrogen atom, it then becomes 3 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom, or goes from H2O to H3O+.

In other words, HCl donates hydrogen ions to water molecules, and since HCl donates hydrogen ions, it is therefore an acid. With this example in mind, we sometimes define an acid also as a substance that increases the concentration of H+ or H3O+ ions in a solution.
