When a conquered nation had to pay a tax to its conquerer, it was called a tribute. Note that some nations, such as the Roman Empire, set themselves up on an unsustainable economic system. The system they used relied on constant new conquests, but when they ran out of places to conquer, they no longer had money coming in from tributes.
