In order to play World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, you have to have all of the expansions before it. After all, if you look at it this way. Lich king is only an addition to the main game. That's like trying to update software on your computer that doesn't exist :)
Just about everybody who plays World of Warcraft plays with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack. After all, playing new content is what WoWers live for.

The Lich King is the commander of all the Scourge forces, and it is his will that keeps them under control. Without a Lich King to guide them, they would rampage chaotically around Azeroth, killing as they go and creating new undead.
