If you are talking about drawing bloodwork, the term is venous puncture, which means the procedure of sliding the needle canula into the vein. After two unsuccessful attempts, any medical professional (medical assistant, nurse, or physician) should get another person in their same profession (e.g. nurse gets another nurse) who is senior in experience or skills. Often for MAs and RNs, the policy is to get a Supervisor. A student would go to their Instructor or Preceptor.
The risk is that repeated "sticks" can damage the vein. It can cause infiltration, or even a small blood clot.
