This is a common misconception. Oxygen does not burn. Oxygen does not explode.

Oxygen combines with lots of other things and sometimes that process is called burning.

Wood burns, coal burns, even iron will burn under the right conditions. One of those conditions is the presence of adequate oxygen. Burning usually releases energy in the form of heat and light. It also produces some type of oxide. Carbon produces carbon dioxide. Iron produces iron oxide. Hydrogen produces hydrogen oxide commonly called water.

If you burn some oil product, gasoline, kerosene, etc the products are water and carbon dioxide. Burning wood produces both of those and ash, which has some potassium hydroxide, and other trace element that form some oxide/hydroxide and become part of the ash.

Incomplete combustion discribes the burning mostly of carbon containing substances with an inadequate amount of oxygen. The carbon forms a mixture of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas.

What does sodium and oxygen make?

Sodium and oxygen are combined to form some kind of oxide of sodium, but there are three different ones. The specific kind produced will be determined by the conditions under which oxidation occurs. When burned in air, sodium will form sodium peroxide(Na2O2). If there is a limited amount of oxygen, sodium oxide (Na2O) will form. Lastly, sodium superoxide (NaO2) will be produced if sodium is burned in oxygen under pressure. Wikipedia has some extra information, and a link is provided.sweat
