John Logie Baird, a Scottish inventor demonstrated television at Selfridges department store in London in 1925. The system was electro-mechanical and used a spinning disc to generate the lines of the image. He went on to demonstrate color television in 1928 using the same principle of spinning discs, one for each color.

In 1929, Baird's system went into public service with the BBC, broadcasting a few hours of television each week. His system remained in regular use until 1936 when the BBC moved to a fully electronic system.

In 1929, Philo Farnsworth demonstrated the world's first fully electronic television system and so eliminated the spinning disc that was part of Baird's system. Farnsworth's system was the basis of RCA's first commercial television broadcasts in the US, starting in 1939. There is little doubt that the service could have been started earlier had it not been for the legal battles that continued throughout the 1930s over the patents for the system.
