well trees provide oxygen as well as homing and food for animals so cutting them down may prove costly to human nature

The trees are no a threat, it is their loss that is a treat. It removes habitat and allows erosion of the soil which the presence of their roots stabilized. It also affects the climate on both a local and global scale. Once a tree is lost it can take 100-500 years for it to grow back as it was and if ALL the trees are cut there are no seed for new trees to grow from.

The best example of what happens when trees are cut is that of Easter Island (see related link below).
