Two or more atoms combine or join with each other for the basic chemical property- to retain neutral state. They do so by mutual sharing of their electrons means by forming covalent bond or by complete sharing of their electrons means by electrovalent bonding.

By these methods they form a molecle or a compound and become stable in nature.

Yes, atoms of the same elements can join together. We see hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and other elements form what are called diatomic molecules. In these structures, two atoms of the same element "pair up" to form the molecule. You're familiar with oxygen being called O2, and this is a direct reference to the diatomic molecule of oxygen that we find in the atmosphere. We also find that carbon can join with other carbon atoms to form molecules, and this property is called catenation.

In the great majority of cases, this is an exothermic process, which is to say, it releases energy, generally in the form of heat (in some cases other forms such as light can also be produced). A compound is created which will have dramatically different chemical properties than those of the elements that it contains.
