Typically when two ships are in close proximity, such as during a refueling at sea, there is a control ship. In the United Staes Navy, the supply ship is the control ship and the vessel taking supplies from the supply ship is the stand-off ship. This means that if there were a problem that required the two ships to seperate, the control ship determines how it is to happen. Also, the non-control ships guide to the course of the control ships.
