Asumming the polariser is vertical, then 100% of vertically polarised light passes through it and 0% horizontal light passes through it. Simple so far.

For 45 degree light it gets weired. Each photon of light has a 50:50 chance of making it through. It is impossible to tell if a particlular photon will or will not pass through. it is totally random. If it does pass through however it will change its polarisation to vertical!

So a scientist would measure a beam of vertically poloarised light at 50% intensity.
