The book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was illustrated from the very first edition, in 1865.

Lewis Carroll had drawn illustrations for his hand-written version of the story Alice's Adventures Under Ground, which he gave to Alice Liddell (the real Alice) as a present in 1864. But he didn't feel that his drawings were of a high enough standard for publication so, when he was preparing the book to be published, he engaged John Tenniel, a cartoonist for the satirical magazine Punch, to provide illustrations.

When the first edition was printed in 1865, Tenniel was disappointed with the quality of the printing as he felt that it didn't do the illustrations justice, so almost all of the 2000 books were disposed of and it was printed again. This edition, which was printed in 1865 but dated as 1866, was the first edition of the book to be commercially available.
