The story took place in the late 19th century during the 1880's. She is 11 at the start of the book. Even though she was inspired by the 'Gibson Girl' of the 1890's and longs to wear puffed sleeves which were the fashion at that time, in the last book she is middle aged with grown children during WWI so she would had to have been a child in the 1880's. The mini-series however is set in the 1890's with the puffed sleeves etc. Here in lies much confusion.
In later books, Anne is a nurse in WWI. She is a middle aged woman at this stage with children old enough to go to war. Assuming she is approximately 45 years old (she didn't marry Gilbert until she was in her mid twenties) the original book takes place around the early to mid 1880's. The puffed sleeves part is a bit puzzling. I think the author may have overlooked that puffed sleeves were not in at that time but were the height of fashion at the time she would have been writing the book.
