Antiochus III, also known as Antiochus the Great, was a Seleucid king who ruled from 222 to 187 BCE. He expanded his empire significantly through military campaigns, reclaiming territories in the Near East and Asia Minor. His reign saw both cultural and economic development, as well as conflicts with Rome and the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Ultimately, his ambitions led to a series of wars that weakened the Seleucid Empire and set the stage for its decline.

Antiochus took the title Epiphanes (meaning God Manifest) when he took the Seleucid throne in 174 BCE. Kings by tradition gave themselves an epithet once taking power, like Alexander 'The Great.' Antiochus's epithet is said to be the first time a king chose to call himself 'God' though Egyptian Pharaohs were known to compare themselves to deities. Another interesting side note is Antiochus was not named Antiochus at birth. His name was Mithradates. ~J.M. DeBord PS - I wrote a novel featuring Antiochus titled "Something Coming."
He was also known as Alexander III of Macedon. Macedon was where he was born.
It was not Titus who sacrificed a pig in Jerusalem. It was Antiochus Epiphanes the Greek king of the Seleucid Empire and a son of King Antiochus III the Great. While he was fighting in Egypt rumours spread that he had been killed. Jason, a High Priest in the Temple in Jerusalem who had been deposed, gathered 1,000 soldiers and forced Menelaus, the high priest appointed by Antiochus, to flee. In 168 BC Antiochus attacked Jerusalem. To consolidate his power in Judea he sided with the Hellenised (influenced by the Greeks) Jews who were in conflict with traditional Jews. He banned Jewish religious practices and ordered the Jews to worship Zeus. Following resistance, in 167 BC Antiochus sacked Jerusalem, built a fortified garrison and dedicated the Temple to Zeus. Sacrifices of pigs were performed. This led to the Maccabean revolt and the Jews regaining control of the Temple.
