Around 1856 the first attempt to attach the bell, it was broken upon delivery. The bell was actually broken a couple of times. Another time when the hammer inside the bell cracked it in 1859. They simply turned the bell so the hammer wouldn't inflict anymore damge to the already cracked bell, and Big Ben was considered finished.
