Camp Barkeley was created in 1940.
During World War II, Abilene was home to Abilene Army Air Field and Camp Barkeley. Camp Barkeley was one of the largest military training camps in the nation and was also the site of a POW camp for Germans who had been captured in North Africa. Not far from Abilene, in Sweetwater, the Women Airforce Service Pilots trained at Avenger Field.
