Smoke and fog
Smoke and fog
smog = Smoke + fog it is created when the fog mixes with the pollution in air. Smog looks almost like fog, but is harmful if inhaled for a sufficient period of time.
The "short" answer is- Inefficient combustion in the vehicle's engine produces chemicals that when exposed to sun-light create smog.
No, there will be no problem at the DMV. The important thing is that the DMV has received your vehicle's smog check certificate number and the vehicle has passed. The reason for the smog test is simply for smog check data which is obtained by Sacramento and used for analysis.
What is your ignition timing? I ran into the same problem. My 95 Corolla failed the first time when I took it for the test. Every thing was very good except the ignition timing. I took it back to my tune up mechanic and asked him why because I did a major tune up before going for the smog. My experienced mechanic looked at my car and told me that for the particular model that I have (made in Canada as opposed to the ones made in USA and/or Japan), the ignition timing can not be adjusted. He showed me the data from his computer and yes, for those that should be adjusted, it should be 10. But those have a different shape. The data the smog mechanics (who provided the data?) are getting do not take into account the differences betw diff models. He told me to should the smog tech under the car hood there is a sticker which indicates what should be adjusted and ignition timing is not there, and "No Other Adjustments Needed" is there. He told me some newer cars don't allow ignition timing adj so people won't make the wrong adj. He told me to look at the smog inpection data when I bought it 2 yrs ago, and under the ignition timing it was N/A. So I went back to the smog tech and showed him. He believed me and my Corolla passed it. I wish whoever provided those smog data specs to the smog techs could update them. It was an unnessary trip to my tune up mechanic and back to the smog mechanic and the pollution created and what was the purpose of the smog inspection?
The percentage of people affected by smog varies depending on location and severity of the smog. In heavily polluted areas, a significant portion of the population can be impacted by health issues related to smog exposure, such as respiratory problems and cardiovascular diseases. Government agencies and health organizations often provide data on the percentage of people affected by smog in specific regions.
There are two major types of smog: photochemical and industrial smog. Photochemical smog is created through a reaction by which air pollutants are struck by sunlight, and form particulate matter and tropospheric ozone. The air pollutants that are most responsible for this type of smog are nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Photochemical is especially a problem in areas with many cars, coal-burning power plants, and the right weather conditions. Los Angeles, CA is a city that often has to deal with photochemical smog.
Summer because photochemical smog is created by the actions of sunlight on pollutants, and sunlight is stronger in the summer than winter.
