The name Farnborough comes from the old Norman words Ferne berga meaning Fern hill. We still have these names locally (Fernhill road and Fernhill lane etc.).
Hawley, area of Fernhill Road, had a boys school in the 50's. Guessing that it was amalgamated with a school called Lyndley School that was boarders and day girls. It became Hawley Place School. (not sure on dates of this transaction or creation) Lyndley School had been owned by the Guinness Family at one point and was taken over by the War Department, sold to the Whitmores and resold to the Purdys. Up to late 1950's maenouvres used to take place on the grounds by various army sections .
