The Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute was established in 1976 by William and Lillian Fishman. A non-profit institute, Sanford-Burnham hosts a staff of over 900 scientists who research the fundamental molecular causes of diseases.
The first institute for research in experimental psychology was opened in 1879 by Wilhelm Wundt in Leipzig, Germany.

The first hearing impaired school in the United States was established by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc in 1817. Gallaudet and Clerc founded the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut.
Thomas Gallaudet received the Honoris Causa degree from Yale College in 1856 and the Pantheon Medal from the French Institute for the Deaf in 1862 in recognition of his contributions to the education of the deaf.
