This happened in 1869. $1 bills were the first to carry a portrait of George Washington, but it was different from the one on current bills. Subsequent designs featured other individuals (including his wife Martha) until 1918, when his picture once again appeared on the denomination.
The current portrait is derived from a painting by Gilbert Stuart; it was first used on the 1923 series of $1 silver certificates and has been on all $1 bills issued since that date.

George Washington's portrait first appeared on the 1869 series of $1 United States Notes. In 1886 new bills with his wife's picture were issued, and ten years later another series was printed featuring both Washingtons. Washington returned alone to the $1 bill in 1918, but in a small portrait to one side of the bill. In 1923 a large, centered portrait similar to the one on current bills was adopted. It's been used since then, with modifications only to the surrounding design and different seal colors. For various political reasons Congress refuses to allow the $1 bill to be further redesigned.

George Washington's portrait didn't appear on any federally-issued $5 bills. Abraham Lincoln's portrait was put on the $5 bill in 1914, coinciding with construction of the Lincoln Memorial.
Lincoln was put on the one-cent coin in 1809 to celebrate his 100th year. It then seems logical that Washington should also be on a coin, so he was put on the quarter. When presidents were put on bills, Washington and Lincoln were the most important and were placed on the $1 and $5.
Washington is currently featured on the $1 bill, the quarter dollar coin, and a $1 coin only minted in 2007. He has also been featured on commemorative coinage, such as a 1982 half dollar, though these weren't for use in circulation.
