It was put in there to honor our first president, George Washington.
The practice of displaying flags around the Washington Monument dates back to Monday, February 23, 1920, when flags were flown from temporary wooden flag poles to celebrate George Washington's birthday. In 1938, aluminum flag poles permanently were installed.
The Washington Monument was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on Saturday, October 15, 1966. The monument is considered to be an excellent example of the Beaux-Arts architectural style, which influenced U.S. architecture from 1880 to 1920.
The memorial, completed in 1922, was designed by Henry Bacon. The huge sculpture of Lincoln was carved by Daniel French Smith with the assistance of the sons of noted stonecarver Ferruccio Piccirilli.
George Washington
Growing up George Had been known as Carver George. When he started school he went by the name: "George Carver". He later added the W and told his friends it was Washington. That's how he got the name "George Washington Carver"
His middle name is Washington. He got it because before he was just George Carver but than there was a second George Carver so he added a W. Later people asked what the W stands for and he said Washington
Mount Rushmore is in Keystone, South Dakota. The 4 Presidents whose faces are carved into the mountain are: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. There will Never be anymore faces added to the monument. Many people have suggested adding another face to the monument, but, that will Never happen.
Vermont, Kentucky and Tennessee were added to the union while Washington was President. There was no territorial expansion.
