John C. Breckinridge was elected Vice President, as President James Buchanan's running mate, in the 1856 Presidential election. Both President Buchanan, and Vice President Breckinridge, were elected on November 4, 1856. John C. Breckinridge, was just 35 when he was elected, and 36 when he was inaugurated Vice President, the youngest Vice President, to date of the United States.

John C. Breckinridge did run for President in the 1860 Presidential race, on the Southern faction of the split Democratic Party, on a "pro-slavery" platform, and received 72 Electoral votes, carrying almost every southern state. Lincoln's 180

Electoral votes, lost the race for Breckinridge. In spite of losing the Presidential race, he won the race for US Senator, from Kentucky. In March of 1861, he was elected by the Kentucky State Legislature as junior US Senator from Kentucky. Breckinridge, along with Lazarus Powell, the senior US Senator from Kentucky, were both accused of supporting the South. Breckinridge, was expelled by resolution as Senator, along with 9 other US Senators, for supporting the secession of the Southern States, on December 4, 1861.

After he was expelled as Senator, he enlisted in the Confederate States Army as a brigadier general, advancing to a major general, commanding the 1st Kentucky brigade. He eventually was made the Confederate Secretary of War, under Jefferson Davis.

After the war ended, Breckinridge feared he would stand trial for treason, and fled to Cuba, then Canada, then the United Kingdom, returning to the US, in 1869, after he was granted amnesty.
