Johnny Guitar - song - was created in 1954.
He had a heart attack. It's the dream of every performing artist: to end life with a show. Johnny "Guitar" Watson had the luck to die on stage. He just started his opening song, when he collapsed on stage, in the Ocean Boulevard Blues Café in Yokohama, Japan, May 19, 1996. He was declared dead shortly later in the hospital.Watson, besides as a composer, arranger, pianist and guitarist, was known as a comedian, especially joking about his own abilities (like in Gangster Of Love). Funny or not, singing the phrase "stronger than a locomotive" in his hit Superman Lover, he felt down on the bandstand. One chapter of my biography The Gangster of Love - Johnny "Guitar" Watson: Performer, Preacher, Pimp (USA, 2009) is dedicated to his tragic and humorous death. For a large part of his audience it took a while to realize that their hero performed his final, fatal act.- Vincent Bakker.

I wish I knew! Been looking forever!
Born in Houston, Texas, Johnny "Guitar" Watson died in Yokohama, Japan, May 17, 1996. His remains were brought home for internment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, near Los Angeles. He rests in a crypt, on a walking distance from Michael Jackson. Both will be dancing now together, no doubt. In de dressing room, minutes before his sudden death on stage, Watson was doing a Michael Jackson imitation.- Vincent Bakker, author of Watson's biography The Gangster of Love - Johnny "Guitar" Watson: Performer, Preacher, Pimp (USA, 2009).
For tens of years there were rumors about Johnny "Guitar" Watson being a pimp. Now, it is for sure he really was. Watson was not a pimp in the old fashioned way. He did not seduce or force any girl to work for him. The girls - mostly in clubs - came to him, offered money and goods to seduce him, and were allowed to stay with him - in exchange for the revenues of prostitution or crime.Several times there grew a real love between the both of them. In that case Watson "retired" his lady from working. The financing of Watson's first golden hit, Ain't That A Bitch (DJM, 1976) was arranged by a young woman, who later was sentenced to twelve years imprisonment. These (and other facts) are based on interviews with tens of artists who worked with Watson, and with three of his ladies from 1968 to 1996, who were his Maecenas as well as his Muse (described in the biography: The Gangster of Love - Johnny "Guitar" Watson: Performer, Preacher, Pimp; USA, 2009).
The duration of Johnny Guitar is 1.83 hours.
During my stint with Johnny the members of his band were: Billy Pittman (Bass), JJ Johnson (keyboards), Larry Cotton (drums), Norman Avery (guitars) and Emory Thomas (drums).
