Samuel Freeman Miller was nominated to the US Supreme Court by Abraham Lincoln in 1862. Miller was an 1838 graduate of Transylvania University Medical School, and a practicing physician for ten years before becoming a lawyer. He read about law in his spare time, and passed the Kentucky bar in 1847. While Miller favored emancipation, his decisions on the bench helped limit civil rights for African-Americans by allowing individuals and non-government enterprises to discriminate against individuals by race, under the theory that the 14th Amendment only applied to the States. Miller served on the US Supreme Court from 1862 until his death in 1890.
