Sarah Lennox (18 September 1706-25 August 1751), was born Lady Sarah Cadogan the daughter of William Cadogan (later 1st Earl Cadogan). On 4 December 1719, she married Charles Lennox, Earl of March at The Hague and in 1723, Charles succeeded to his father's title of Duke of Richmond, whereupon Sarah became Duchess of Richmond. Sarah was Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Caroline from 1724 to 1737. A 19th-century source cites the extremes to which early modern aristocratic parents might go in controlling their children's marriages. Lady Sarah's marriage is said to have been arranged between the fathers of the parties in settlement of a gaming debt owed by the first Duke of Richmond to Earl Cadogan. Cadogan was a military attache serving in the Netherlands, while Richmond attended the Dutch court in a diplomatic capacity.
