To answer this question, we must know what the Barisan Socialis is. The PAP were made up of two sides: the non-communist wing and the pro-communist wing. The two sides eventually broke up because they could not reach a final decision. The pro-communist formed a group called the Barisan Socialis (BS). Their leader was Lim Chin Siong. The leader of the non-communist wing of PAP was Lee Kuan Yew, now our Minister Mentor. Now, back to the question: Why was the Barisan Socialis against the idea of merger with Malaya? If you remember, the BS were made up of Communists. They actually had already caused trouble in Singapore and Malaya. Back in Malaya, Sultan Tunku Abdul Rahman had already controlled the communists on their side. The Barisan Socialis was afraid that if Singapore merged with Malaya (and other states to form Malaysia) they would be even better controlled. Thus, they opposed the idea of merger with Malaya.
