Nope, they are native to roughly the eastern half of the state. I just caught a bunch of specimens today (5/25/12) from the Walnut River near El Dorado. They look similar to bluegill, except they are usually much smaller, have more distinct and brilliantly spotted markings, and have a longer "ear".
