Louis Agassiz collected his evidence that glaciers covered most of the earth because he grew up and lived in Europe. In Europe he found several rocks that were very scratched and/or polished. And since there was nothing in Europe that pointed to why this happened he automatically thought that Europe was covered by glaciers. His conclusion that erratic boulders, jumbled sediments and U-shaped valleys in the high Alps were the products of ice sheets that once covered large parts of the continents was startling. Attributing observed fossil extinctions to the action of ice, Agassiz missed the overwhelming importance of evolution. Agassiz later made important contributions to the earth sciences, and to glacial geology in particular.
