From its Wikipedia entry:

"Mount Erebus was discovered on January 27, 1841 (and observed to be in eruption) by polar explorer Sir James Clark Ross "

Erebus has been in almost continual eruption since its discovery, that being the nature of Strombolian eruptions in volcanoes.

There is no record of a 'devastating' eruption of Mt Erebus.
