The shark is the symbol of the Naval Coastal Warfare units. It dates back to when the units were created during Vietnam. They were then known as Inshore Undersea Warfare Units. The first were commanded by Inshore Undersea Warfare Group ONE, stood up in the '60s. The Shark mouth was painted on the patrol boats and began to symbilize the fledgling community. The Shark has lighting bolts representing the electronic components of radar surveillence and communcations. The shark also has headphones representing the sonar capabilities of the units. In 2010 the shark was revised under the Maritime Expeditionary Security Forces when the NCW was reorganized to the MESF. The headphones were removed from the shark and a rifle added denoting the landward security and ship protection part of the mission.
