If you are referring to the Hong Kong based media company, its origins go back to the 1970s, when its founder, Lai Chee Ying (Jimmy Lai) was an entrepreneur and a businessman in the garment business (he ran a successful sweater manufacturing company). Mr. Lai entered media in 1989, and by 1990 he was publishing Next Weekly, which became a successful magazine. In 1995, he founded Apple Daily, which soon became Hong Kong's second largest daily newspaper. And then, in 1999, he bought Paramount Publishing Group, which he renamed "Next Media."
